Who Is Still Supporting the GOP?

Despite plummeting approval ratings, Donald Trump and Congress still have support from Evangelical Christians.

If you have been watching the news, then you know about the recent events in the world of national politics. The special election of Alabama, the US decision of recognizing Israel, and Congress' determination of passing its controversial tax bill. All of these events surely have people thinking one thing: How is the GOP still here?

According to the most recent Gallup news poll, 81 percent of Americans disapprove of how Congress is doing its job and considering the current population of the United States surely that means that GOP's days in power are numbered. This is a simple question with a not so easy answer, despite both the Legislative and Executive branches popularity plummeting due to endless scandal and criticism from this year there is still one group out there that still support the imploding GOP. They are the Evangelicals of the United States.

According to Pew Forum, the current population of Christians in the United States currently, stand at 70.6 percent but the denomination of Evangelical Christians stand at 25.4 percent so obviously, these numbers seem quite small on a national level but I looked deeper into this and found out that in the southern part of the US, the population of Evangelical Christians stand at wide percentage of 34 percent, which is higher than the national percentage. So only one thing remains, why does this large voting block support a party that is plagued by scandal? One word: validation.

From abortion to same-sex marriage, the GOP is the only political party that agrees with the Evangelicals on these issues we still face in the United States today. The Evangelicals are desperate to be heard and to have their demands met, even if it means sticking with a party that has more scandals than bills passed in both parts of Congress. This group will do anything to have their voice heard and feel any form of validation to their extreme form of thinking of what the United States of America should look like in comparison to the rest of the world.

But rest assured that things will get better from this point now. Take the results of the Special Election of Alabama to fill the vacant seat left by US Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Despite a close result, Doug Jones pulled off a complete upset by defeating his Republican opponent Roy Moore. The reddest state in the south made history by putting Jones in the Senate as a Democrat from this red state has not had a seat here for decades. This election, in my own opinion, was the crystal ball that provided insight that this country has a chance of electing better leaders that speak for all of us, not just for a handful of rich people, and not just for one religious group. My message to anyone reading this is to forget about party, forget about being a Republican, Democrat, or Independent and remember this. We are all human, we breathe the same air, live on the same planet, and see the same sky and sun every day when we open our eyes. We are all different on the outside, we are varied and unique and that is what makes the United States of America great.

Come 2018 and 2020, forget about party and just vote for what is right for humanity, demand that our leaders do better for the sake of this amazing nation and its future. Because we all deserve a life lived with dignity and sadly our current leaders in Congress do not have our best interests in mind. We can do better and we must, the upcoming mid-term elections and the 2020 Presidential Election depend on us coming together and taking action.
