US leads world in COVID cases
US sees third October spike in COVID-19 related deaths
United States: America, according to a recent BBC News report, leads the world in Coronavirus related deaths.
Thursday, 29 October 2020 saw, in the United States, no fewer than 91,000 new COVID-19 cases reported. Thus far, according to a report published by Johns Hopkins University, more than nine million COVID-19 cases have been reported.
More than 1,000 Americans, the same day, were reported to have died because of COVID-19 and there are no signs of the pandemic wavering. This is the third time since the beginning of the month the United States has seen a significant death toll. COVID-19 related deaths, passed 229,000, does not show any sign of slowing down any time soon.
Tuesday, 3 November 2020 sees Americans going to the polls to determine the political direction of the country. Tens of millions of Americans, either by in-person voting or mail-in ballot, have already cast their votes. Many of the people that have already voted have done so partly because of the pandemic.
Donald Trump Jr, the president’s eldest son, made an appearance on Fox News on Thursday where he repeated his father's belief that the Coronavirus pandemic is under control.
"I went through the [CDC] data, because I kept hearing about new infections," Trump Jr said. "But I was like, 'Well, why aren't they talking about deaths?' Oh, because the number is almost nothing. Because we've gotten control of this and we understand how it works."
Will the United States see incompetent President Donald J Trump extend his administration by another four years or will Democratic candidate Joe Biden become the 46th American president?
“More Testing equals more Cases. We have best testing. Deaths WAY DOWN,” Trump tweeted on Friday, 30 October 2020. “Hospitals have great additional capacity! Doing much better than Europe. Therapeutics working!”
Trump seems unaware less testing means more undetected cases.
Instead of working against the pandemic, focusing on his presidential campaign, Trump is more interested in berating Biden than he is with saving American lives.
“I’ve done more in 47 months than Joe Biden has done in 47 years!” Trump tweeted. “A vote for Republicans is a vote for the American Dream, and the party of Abraham Lincoln!”
The Republican Party has not been the so-called “party of Abraham Lincoln” for more than a century. Lincoln would not recognise his own party because it greatly differs from what he knew.
Tuesday is fast approaching. The election result could be interpreted a referendum on Trump’s handling of the crisis.
Currently, across the United States no fewer than 21 states are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks. The most severe outbreaks can be found in key battleground states which could determine the presidential election.
One of the hardest hit states, Arizona, is experiencing a significant rise in COVID-19 infections. The worst impacted communities in Arizona, the Navajo Nation, has been greatly impacted.
In a deeply divided country, where the wearing of personal protective masks politically unambiguous, it is becoming increasingly obvious which political supporters takes the virus seriously.
Even though Biden has continued to campaign, noting the significantly different approaches by both politicians, the Democratic Party candidate is more in tune with safety protocols than the current president.
US health experts, recognising how close the United States is coming to the annual flu season, are warning the case load and death toll will continue to rise.
"If things do not change, if they continue on the course we're on,” White House coronavirus task force member Dr Anthony Fauci said, “there's going to be a whole lot of pain in this country with regard to additional cases and hospitalisations and deaths."
