In light of recent events, I want to take a step back, acknowledge and applaud Nathan Phillips. Vietnam veteran. Omaha elder. Keeper of the secret pipe. Water Protector at Standing Rock. Tribal member of the Omaha Nation.
Paulina PachelPublished 5 years ago in The SwampBrexit Deal and Confidence Votes Yield Little Surprise
This week has been another of frustration and chaos for the UK’s Brexit plans. It started with Theresa May’s deal being roundly trounced in the House of Commons on Tuesday, a vote of confidence on Wednesday and confirmation that the Prime Ministers "plan B" will be brought to MP’s in less than two weeks.
Patrick HollisPublished 5 years ago in The SwampThe Sixth Amendment
The Sixth Amendment covers the right to a trial by jury, and the right to having representation in an expedited public trial. Jail time means being supported by public expense, so it makes sense to have a speedy trial as a constitutional right. Some people, however, will wind up in jail no matter what they do. The right to a fair trial is a fundamental right covered by the Bill of Rights.
Iria Vasquez-PaezPublished 5 years ago in The SwampWhy the Gillette Commercial Is Important
The recent project released by shaving company Gillette, "We Believe: The Best Men Can Be," has fallen under a ridiculous amount of scrutiny since it's debut on January 13, 2019. The aim of the project was to make a public statement regarding domestic abuse, bullying, and many other prevalent issues in our society. It brings up how certain societal/cultural influences can contribute to these issues, and how men often have a major role in both it's prevalence, and it's prevention.

Happy Brexit everybody! So this what the future looks like. I was promised pink hoverboards and killer cyborgs but instead we’ll be arguing about Brexit as our crazy little island sinks into the rising tides.
Johnny VedmorePublished 5 years ago in The SwampRussia: Royalty and the Romanovs
I have alway been fascinated by Russia: the history, the architecture, the influence, the Revolution. The country has been severely repressed for centuries. First by the gigantic gap imposed by the monarchy led by the Romanovs. Then by the tyrannic rule of Communism, which was meant to loosen the grip of rulers to promote equality and freedom. Although the base of communism is to support the working class, it has been transformed by brutal rulers to impose their new set of ideologies that continue to control freedom in the country.
Ana R-SandiaPublished 5 years ago in The SwampSpoiling It for the Rest?
Long after the midterms have ended, I have been wondering about a part of the elections that no one really focuses on (unless their party candidate loses). I am talking about the third parties.
Kendall EarlPublished 5 years ago in The SwampNancy Pelosi Is Second, Not Third, in Line for the Presidency
My wife Tina called my attention to a funnily annoying meme last night: Commentators on MSNBC keep saying that Nancy Pelosi (as Speaker of the House) is "third in line for the Presidency." I just heard Stephanie Ruhle and Malcolm Nance say that.
Paul LevinsonPublished 5 years ago in The SwampThe Left and Right Paradigm Is a Lie - We Need to Talk About the Centre
The idea of left and right in politics is always divisively subjective and relative to your own presupposed position on that spectrum. If you were to say that your natural political position is occupying the centre right, then you could refer to anyone on the right of you as far right and anyone on the political left as on the left of you, irrelevant of whether or not those people are on the centre left or far left. So, if you consider yourself as on the far right, then even the people on the hard right will often be termed as leftist. I saw this while I was investigating the Traditional Britain Group, a right wing conservative pressure group who often referred to centre right politicians as on the left of politics.
Johnny VedmorePublished 5 years ago in The SwampPutting Your Country Through Hell on a Lie and Criminal Acts: Brexit
On June 23, 2106, the United Kingdom held a referendum on whether to remain in the European Union (EU) or leave it. The first question anyone would ask might be: Why would a nation choose to leave the world's premier trading and peace-keeping organization, envisioned by none other than Winston Churchill, WWII Prime Minister of Britain, saviour of the nation from Hitler's dreams of world domination?

Why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is the Future of American Politics
The smart-talking girl from the Bronx who has no limits when it comes to slamming the President is making history every single day. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (or AOC) became a senator in a landslide victory this past midterm election, and as she continues to propose legislation and state her cases for everything from racial justice to economic equality, she also represents the future for young people in our political system.
J. P. FrattiniPublished 5 years ago in The Swamp Had Enough of Gridlock Yet?
BRYCE ON POLITICS - Actually, there is nothing new here. Click for AUDIO VERSION. Even though the session is still young, I am already tired of the shenanigans going on between the President and the new 116th Congress. The news media takes pleasure in reminding us of the number of days the government has been partially shut down, but a more important statistic is that we are now 15 days into our political gridlock (as of today). While the Congress is stalled, the President moves on with new appointees, such as William Barr for Attorney General, sending Secretary of State Mike Pompeo around the world to secure peace, and negotiating trade deals behind the scenes with other countries.
