The Emhoff family.

Vice President Kamala Harris and her blended family are showing Americans that it is possible to get along in spite of differences. Harris is part Jamaican and Southern Asian/ Indian. She is a Christian Baptist who is viewed as an African American. Her husband Douglas Emhoff is Jewish and the new VP gets along really well with her stepchildren Cole and Ella who were named for jazz legends Cole Porter and Ella Fitzgerald. The children love her and call her Momala and this is exceptional as many children and their step parents do not get along.

You can see the genuine love in these individuals in every photo and you know they are not pretending. In addition, Kerstin Emhoff, the ex wife of the Second Gentleman is a close friend of Kamala Harris. They all really do get along and Kerstin was invited to the Inauguration. She stated publicly that she was honored to be a part of the historic day even from behind the mask. This really is unprecedented for the ex wife and the current wife to care for each other and get along. The Vice President has said on more than one occasion that Kerstin Emhoff is a good friend.

Kamala Harris being married to a divorcee will be the second time in recent history this has happened as it relates to those in the highest offices in the land. Former First Lady Melania Trump was the Donald’s third wife. His previous spouses Ivanna and Marla Maples pretty much live their own lives and do not have contact with his current wife. Some believe that Ivanna and Marla may be under gag orders for the purpose of retaining their financial settlements.

Melania on the other hand has discussed why she believes she has remained married to the former President and her predecessors did not. In her tell all book, former friend and assistant to Melania, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff shares what First Lady number 46 told her.It was not anything scathing or that would be fodder for tabloids but the conversation indicated that Melanie somehow believes she knows better how to please her husband than his first and second wives were able to.

Wolkoff says that Melania confided in her that she does her own thing and does not pressure her husband or expect him to do special favors for her. The former First Lady believes the two previous wives did just that. This puts the blame for the failure of the marriages totally on the spouses as if Donald Trump did nothing wrong. Based on his actions while President it’s difficult to imagine that he had no responsibility in his two previous marriages failing. It’s different strokes for different folks in how they handle previous spouses of their husband or wife. Having said that we probably will never hear Kamala Harris discussing what went wrong in her husbands first marriage.

Neither is it likely that Kerstin Emhoff will bad mouth the Vice President or the Second Gentleman. It’s nice to see warmth and love eminating from all the branches of the Emhoff family. This is a much needed breath of fresh air that is needed in the nation. Kerstin Emhoff is a film director who is of Swedish descent so she adds another dynamic to the family. She identifies as Christian but mentioned in a recent interview that the White House needs a smudging. This is usually done by Wiccans, Native Americans or those with non traditional religious views so again something different is on the table.

The Emhoff’s represent a changing America, as decades ago there were not many marriages between those of different religious faith or men and women who were not of the same ethnicity. At one point, in some states in this nation, it was illegal to marry outside of your race. There were also those who were actually disowned by relatives when they married a spouse who had different belief system. There has been progress in America but we still have far to go. At least now we seem to be on the right path.
