History in the making

Thomas Jonathan (Jon) Ossoff made Georgia history alongside Raphael Warnock as the duo became the first Jewish and African American to be elected to the US Senate. Ossoff was born on February 16, 1986, and before his election, he was an investigative journalist and a documentary film producer. The two Georgia races attracted significant attention nationwide as they decide who will control the Senate in the 117th Congress. With Warnock and Ossoff's victories, Democrats and Republicans now each will hold 50 Senate seats. The tie-breaking vote will be cast by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has the tie-breaking vote which will give Democrats a majority.

Ossoff will become the first Jewish member as well as the youngest member of the Senate. in the 117th Congress. He is also the first Jewish member of the Senate from Georgia and the first Jewish senator from the Deep South since 1879 when Benjamin F. Jonas of Louisiana, was elected. Ossoff will be the first Democrat from Georgia elected to a full term in the Senate since Max Cleland in 1996. Along with Warnock, the duo will be the first Democratic U.S. senators from Georgia in 16 years since. The last was Zell Miller who left office in 2005. Ossoff is also the first millennial senator to be elected.

It is unfortunate that so many milestones were overshadowed by the mob who stormed the White House and trashed the offices of US Senators. Last week Donald Trump had said to wait and see what would happen on January 6 which was the date Joe Biden's election would be confirmed. It was also one day after the Georgia Senate race. The Donald ordered his base to go to Washington to the Capitol and this is exactly what they did. Four people are dead and there is talk of removing the 45th president from office. The good news is that things seem to be getting back to a somewhat normal state.

On January 21, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in as the new President and Vice President. Once Ossoff and Warnock become official and Donald Trump is long gone, America can begin to heal. The Georgia Senators elect are proponents of Americans receiving a $2,000 stimulus check which a majority in the nation are in agreement with. Hopefully, security will be increased in Washington, and there will not be a repeat of what took place on Wednesday, January 6.

Jon Ossoff's mother, Heather Fenton, is an immigrant who came to the U.S. at age 23. She is the co-founder of NewPower PAC, an organization that works to elect Georgia women to local offices. His father, Richard Ossoff, is a Russian Jew and of Lithuanian Jewish descent. He owns a specialty publishing company. Strafford Publications. Jon Ossoff was raised Jewish. and previously held Australian citizenship because of his mother.

Ossoff is a proponent of the Affordable Care act and believes no American should die from any preventable illness. He is also big on climate change. The Senator-elect has been very critical of President Trump and opposes prison sentences for nonviolent drug offenders. He is married to Alisha Kramer an OBGYN resident at Emory and Henry. Magazines like Vogue have described the Senator-elect as hot and his use of Tiktoc has endeared him to younger generations. The residents of Georgia as Americans who voted in the 2020 -presidential election have chosen change and desire to leave the Trump years behind. Someone, please send a memo to the violent Trump supporters.
