Vintage Is Back!

"I hope it’s here to stay!"

I'm about to let you in on a little secret. Fashion is cyclical, and what was old will almost certainly become new again.

"It's hard to get over the stigma that you actually wore these styles during your unfashionable youth, but suddenly it's cool again!"

Recycling fashion trends from eras past isn't a new idea. It was around in Napoleon's day, when his wife, Empress Josephine, wore filmy white dresses that harked back to classical Greece and Rome.

Empress Josephine

We know that fashion trends are ever-changing. New trends and styles are constantly entering into the mainstream, and most of us are just struggling to keep up. But how are we supposed to afford an entirely new wardrobe every single season?!

It's no coincidence that styles like flared denim and crop tops that were popular decades ago have now, once again, permeated the trend-driven landscape of today's youth. This is why you should never throw away your favorite pieces. If they fit and flatter you but have gone out of style, store them away in a box in the back of your closet for a few years, and they just might make a style comeback. You'll be ahead of the game without having to spend any of your hard-earned paychecks on a new version of something you already own!

Check out some of the classic styles that fell out of fashion for a brief while but have returned in all their vintage glory and are once again. From full circle skirts that fall below the knee to wiggle dresses that were de rigueur in the 1940s and '50s, these fashion trends have proven to withstand the test of time and are now back and better than ever.

Vintage trends are coming back. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and even second-hand apps and websites have had quite the last few years. Clothes once thought of as ‘totally over’ have resurfaced in these purchase locations and we fashion lovers are eating it up. Over the last five years, sales for stores selling second-hand items have skyrocketed.

Starting off with one of the most popular vintage trends on the market right now- high waist. A nice high waist can be found in almost any genre of bottom. Pants, jeans, shorts, and skirts all have entered the high-waist space recently. High waists can be super flattering and (for the shorties like me) help give our legs an illusion of length! Up for a pair of mom jeans, anyone???

This decade it’s coming back in the form of midi skirts, the once-popular “hippie skirt” is another vintage trend making a comeback. Hippie skirts are essentially the most comfortable and fun skirts on the market. Falling right below the knee, just a bit higher than the 70s skirts, hippie skirts have come back in a variety of patterns, but oftentimes florals (just like those 70s skirts). These skirts are such a fun vintage trend.

Culottes originally graced this great Earth in the 1500s, when men would wear them as knee-length pants that tightened at the knee. Mainly worn by European male aristocrats, the term soon made its way to the woman’s wardrobe. Hanging just at the knee, falling like a skirt, but split off into two legs, the historical culotte style changed a bit as a woman’s pant. And they’re back and better than ever. The (very very) vintage style is popping up in designer clothing culture again!

Finally, Big Sunglasses Are Back in Style! Teeny-tiny sunglasses have been de rigueur for the last year or so. But now, bigger frames have staged a comeback!

You don't have to be planning a beach-bound vacation to take advantage of some of the chicest sunglasses trends. In fact, sunglasses are just as essential for a walk around the block or a hang in the park. Plus, they're an instant outfit boost.

Tiny sunglasses were fun, but they’re too conspicuous. You can’t hide behind lenses that are as big as a fingernail, Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten about them — the 70s style is back.

There is something beautiful about trying on vintage hairstyles that makes us all feel nostalgic!

If you want, you can ask your mothers or grandmothers about these hairstyles if you are unaware of how popular these styles are. Not only celebrities and famous people loved them, but they were also worn by every other girl out there.

If you are one who still watches the old movies and looks at heroines of that time, you'll be thrilled to know that some of these styles are a thing again!

One of my absolute favorites is the voluminous victory rolls. Victory rolls are one of the most popular looks from the 1940s. It was a particularly patriotic ‘do, but now it encapsulates vintage glamour. To be honest, this girl is killing the ’40s ideal: the hairstyle, the color, the red lip – perfection!

The long pin-up ‘do is also particularly sexy and bodacious. If your hair is long and lovely, you can create a pin-up look out of the simplest half updo. Her front layers have been pulled back off her face and the crown has been teased to create a voluminous mane. Finally, the ends were curled for an old-school polish.

It’s always enjoyable to look back at past fashions. Whether you’re reading a vintage magazine, looking at old images online, or even watching a movie made or set in the past, it’s fun to imagine what it might have been like to wear those styles and fashions. In some cases, especially if the images you’re looking at are from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, you might even have worn the clothes yourself, and you’ll have a particular affection for them.

The beauty of fashion is that it is cyclical, and at least some elements of past fashion ideas will turn up in modern styles. Some of these fashion statements are back and hotter than ever before! Will you decide to incorporate any in your own wardrobe?
