Celebrating Black History Month by Amplifying Black Voices on Vocal
Black History Month is a meaningful time for not only Black people in the United States but all those who identify with the plight and struggle Black or African Americans have faced throughout the decades. However, despite the trauma and injustice, they have always found a way to create breathtaking works of art. Which, in a lot of cases can be traced back to starting entire revolutions. Creators in the Black community are at the forefront of a variety of creative movements and pioneering trends, most of which transcend into brilliant works of art, music, fashion, and innovation.

EJ Ferguson has been on the come up as a creative writer for quite some time, and after diving into her work, the position of success she finds herself in now seems far from happenstance. Since a short story of hers gained popularity online at the age of 14, her work has been recognized by casual readers and academics alike. Now, at 28, still in the early stages of her career, it's really not much of a surprise that she's making some noise on Vocal – specifically with Vocal Challenges.

Amethyst Qu, if that is her real name (it's not), describes herself as an earth-friendly crystal worker—and that's just the start of her mystical presence on Vocal. From crystal magick, to travel, birding, photography, creator resources, and more, Amethyst's author page hosts a wide range of stories that all stem back to the theme of mindfulness.

In a society stunted by intergenerational poverty, Eugena Oh and the "I Have a Dream" Foundation are leveling the field by offering holistic, individualized support for disadvantaged youths and families across the globe. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, the nonprofit empowers children (“Dreamers”) in under-resourced communities to graduate from college by equipping them with the skills and knowledge to succeed in postsecondary school, along with tuition support to aid in removing financial barriers.

Let's leave the obvious right where it is and talk about what 2021 wasn't. It wasn't a year shy of creativity; Suri Chan integrated her artwork into her poetry—creating a new layer of depth to her already-intriguing prose. No, it wasn't a year of missed opportunities; Call Me Les broadened resources and opportunities for engaged creators by founding The Vocal Social Society and the Vocal Creators Chronicle. 2021 wasn't a year when hidden gems remained unseen; the work of CJ Miller finally received the attention it deserved. It wasn't a year we took too seriously; Lindsay Rae Brown offered a lighter side to life with every story she shared. Though, it wasn't a year without legacy; Tom Bradbury left a legacy that will forever inspire creators in the Vocal community. It wasn't a year we took on alone; Culture Slate and People! Just say Something! exemplified the effectiveness of true collaborative efforts.

Last year, I wrote a reflection spotlighting my favorite stories from 2020. Out of 35,000 stories, I chronicled the ones that stood out; the ones I remembered, logged in a Note on my phone, re-read more than twice, and ultimately shared in my personal iteration of "This Year on Vocal" because they were just too good to keep to myself. That reflection was titled "Am I Here," named after a poem that I will never forget.
