Experts say that spending even just a few minutes on Facebook or other social media sites can affect your self-esteem and make you more inclined to spend time comparing yourself to others, which isn’t good for your mental health.

In fact, researchers have even coined a name for it: FOMO (fear of missing out), or being worried about not being able to participate in social activities or experiences because others seem to be doing them.

We all know how addictive social media can be. And while we’re not saying you should (or shouldn’t) quit social media altogether, what we are saying is that taking a break every once in a while will help keep your emotions in check.

Whenever you find yourself getting upset or feeling down, take a few hours or even a day away from it all and do something to lift your spirits. Exercise and spending time with loved ones can have an enormous impact on your mood and outlook!

In other words, for every episode of reality TV you watch or tabloid magazine you read, spend an hour doing something more uplifting — read a book, work out or spend time with loved ones.

When you stop learning, you’re dead in the water. If you have a desire to be an emotionally strong person, it’s important to continue educating yourself.

Psychology is a relatively new field of study and science is constantly discovering more ways to make humans happy.

By keeping up with your studies, you’ll not only become an expert in your own life but also help others around you learn how to better themselves as well.

Reading and learning are great ways to open your mind and learn about new things. Sometimes you need something to pull you out of a funk or re-connect with yourself; it’s also important for mental growth as a whole.

Surrounding yourself with positive and encouraging people is crucial, as well — don’t forget to ask for help when you need it!
