Your Holding

Don’t breathe too deeply

in case you let go of your holding

strong, you and your husband, united

through the terrible journey home,

remembering his first

and only year. You are both so

cautious with your words, with your

touch, with your dreams for tomorrow as this

insidious grief steeps.

Once you get in the truck, the silence screams

not to notice his empty seat.

So poignant and powerful. I am intrigued by voice in this piece -- from the gentle caution of the opening line, to the scream in the final lines. The only thing not tentative is that devastatingly empty seat. Shivers.
