Working Through Writer's Burnout

With opposing poetry forms

LIMERICK FROM A FOOGY MIND

There once was a fellow quite witty

Who wrote poetry so pretty.

But then life made him terse,

he lost control of his verse,

Now isn’t that more the pity?

He carried on to write a new ditty,

but everything came out rather shitty,

As much as he tried,

with every word he just cried,

Because nothing more quite fitty.

Then one day he woke with a start

a voice told him, “don’t be such a fart”.

“You will get through the block

if you work through the clock

Never give up on your art!”

The unexplained phenomenon that is the subconscious mind churning inside us, rears inexplicable ideas at the oddest times. Sometimes it is best to stop trying so hard for a while and just let them surface on their own schedule. A haiku comes into focus.

AHA MOMENT

Ask not the reason why it occurs at odd hour

Heed its call instead and seize the day

At last it arrives with clarity of image

Many thoughts pass to be forgotten in the night

Over moon’s glow and washed to sea

Master the province to capture the prize

Entered by hand to resurrect at dawn

Night’s slumber seems more restful when

Time is not forsaken when committed to page.
