Will They Thank You?
By Steven Alexander Mailer
When your boys fall down
in the dirt and the ash,
cowring, hurt
before the clash,
will they thank you?
When their limbs splinter
and their cries have flown!
When their dreams wither
and their hearts are blown!
Will they thank you?
When those boys of less than a score
are left to die alone and dream no more
will they thank you?
When their anguished voices join the silent chorus,
when we beg forgiveness but their spirits ignore us,
will they thank you?
When they can no longer salute or fall in line
when their nights are haunted by their crimes
when their souls are blackened by all they did for us
Will they thank the man who told them
it was glorious?
