What it Means to Be Suicidal

Addressing the Dangerous Stigma that Is Clouding Mental Health

This article in particular is for the people who cannot grasp the concept of Suicide. Everyone has their opinions on the matter; Some believe it is a coward's move, some believe it is selfish, some even believe that it is "the easy way out."

Suicide affects us all, directly or indirectly, and yet it is so stigmatized that no one wants to talk about it. It is this big elephant in the room that no one wants to address, but why? The people who suffer silently don't want to speak up because, frankly, in this society mental health is not taken seriously enough. We have people who would rather be alone and take their own lives than speak up only to receive judgmental glares and a straight jacket. The stigma surrounding suicide is very dangerous, so it's time to have an open discussion about what being suicidal really means.

Put Yourself In Their Shoes

Imagine, you wake in the morning and just stare at the walls.

No motivation or inspiration to do anything at all...

Deeper you fall.

Do you call out from the pit and reach out for help?

Or do you paint on a fake smile and keep quiet like everybody else?

You can't speak up because people will just call you crazy...

Offer you a straight jacket and tell you, "You're just lazy"

Put you on some pills and tell you "You'll be okay... maybe"

Trauma, on trauma, on trauma–I became who I am because of the trauma.

Try to talk it out and people will cut their eyes and tell you "You just like drama"

Then they'll gossip and say "Well, they seemed fine yesterday"....

The stigma keeps me silent, I just want to tough it out...

Figure it all out, dig myself out.

Until mental health is taken seriously, this is how it will be...

Losing mothers, brothers, and sisters who were forced to set themselves free.

They didn't want to die, they just wanted to be pain free. Agree?

So lets begin to reach out..

To the silent student hiding in the back, to the lone diner, to the kid who does nothing but shout,

To the girl who always seems so angry, to the friend that's been acting a little off lately,

To the one who pretends to be perfect all the time, to the teenager that knows nothing but crime.

It's okay to not be okay, and it's okay to want to give up some days...

No one in this world has it all together anyway,

Ignore what the magazines say.

This society is due for a revolution...

One that stops creating more problems and offers more solutions.

Love is the solution.

A society unashamed to openly love and support their fellow humans.

We are the revolution,

We must love our fellow humans.

You may not understand depression or suicide, and that is okay; But from a nonjudgmental viewpoint, it takes a serious amount of courage and suffering for someone to commit suicide. It's not the easy way out, it's the latter. The thought of leaving this world and knowing nothing of what will happen next, is terrifying in itself. Depression is not a phase, and people with depression are notorious for masking it extremely well due to their belief that they would be burdening others with their darkness. Mental health is equally as important as physical health, and we could save a lot of lives by recognizing this as a society.
