we weren't on a coffee date
you took me out for tea
but as we talked I felt your eyes
get lost in mine, at sea
-
and on that night you caught me, I
was blind to winter's ice
but I still slipped
and didn't mind
falling into you was nice
-
we weren't going out that night
we just had shared a train
but when we went to meet our friends
I had your words in my brain
-
and you traced shapes along my knee
beneath the table's top
spelling thoughts, I never knew
but dreamed about nonstop
-
we weren't meeting privately
we just happened to be alone
and over a bottle of wine had chosen
to make our secrets known
-
but still we weren't
swelling with
the music in our ear
skilled on a stage
we played our parts
bravely, and without fear
-
but when the grand piano stopped
it was time to take the leap
you disappeared so careless of
the hurt that I would keep
-
but since then I have
erased the work
of all that we've been through
I wrote a story of my own
of the person I've grown into
-
so if you see me on the street
don't ask me what is current
I'll always let my silence be
a reminder of what we weren't
