Waters

From gills to lungs, from fins to feet.

I feel her knocking on my cervix with loud thuds and sporadic thumping,Eager and antsy to see what the world offers,Anxious to move her aquatic life to terrestrial terrain.

My little mermaid growing legs to stretch in summer suns,Shedding gills to give space to lungs. What once felt like an eternity has melted down to days,Like an end of an era and the beginning of humanity. The sensation of baby practice breathing in water sacsI just can’t comprehend,Until I realize my journey began the same as hers.

I find it kind of beautiful that some people believeOur human ancestors came from the sea and since our community split,One half back into the water and waves and weightless lack of gravity,And the other remained to endure a less accommodating terrain.

Like a legend or curse in its fame,We are created in water till we’re ready to be more than just a daydream or fantasy. From aquatic beginnings to the terrestrial plane,We remain forever to wonder at the wandering of human feet.

I feel her knocking and teasing earth-side that soonShe’ll come forth from the waters headfirst, upside down, and crying.

About the Creator

Jesemynn Cacka

I love poetry. Not the classic "roses are red, violets are blue.." but more gritty, visceral, and descriptive poetry about real life experiences of what it's like to be human. I also enjoy writing works of fiction in romance and horror.
