Wake for a Rich Man

Careful Social Deception

“After”

The only one on the floor in the wake

Who didn’t drink anything.

Solemn face, trying to hold in laughter after

Drunken relatives no longer wearing the frowns

They’d practice for Old Man Dillard -

A lecherous parasite we all pretended to care for -

For his money. Oh his money.

She waited for their carousing to end in a

Simpering pile around the coffin

In the center of the room.

Tiptoeing in her skinny heels

She expertly unlocked the master safe

Behind

Old Man Dillard's large and grotesque nude

In the dining room and the back up

Behind the 3rd bathroom’s mirror -

The one with diamonds in it -

All inside her bra -

Leaving the wake at three in the morning -

Starting her new life in Cuba

On the red eye.
