Waiting

On the back burner

Pain simmers in her heart

like forgotten coffee in a pot

last nights supper on the stove

or a garden left to rot

He lets her brew until she’s empty

void of any sustenance

void of any pride

barely an utterance

She disappears like thin gray smoke

just a stain of life remains

a faint shadow on the wall

he will never claim

An ache unlike any other

too painful to describe

scraps against her broken heart

what unflinching diatribe

She wrings her hands frantically

fretting once again

holding her breath for nothing

just smoke in the wind

She’s waiting for the man

to notice that he loves her

but to him she’s just a thought

he keeps on the back burner

sad poetry
