Unrequited

There was a fire ignited within me.

I only intended to be a spark,

to provide warmth when you are cold.

To light up your dark.

Intrigued by my embers, you extended a hand.

At first, you marveled at my brightness.

You danced in the shadows of my flame.

Fueled by your awe, I soared into the sky - a fatal mistake.

You see, I burned too brightly.

And you were afraid.

Since I couldn’t be dimmed, you took all of my light.

Down to the very last ember, smothered away.
