Under Your Spotlight

I fell away into the shadows of you.

the end of the line draws near

as I spin through revels of disaster

all locked inside my tilted head.

*

poetry was never leaving your side

even while I wilted on the vine,

drained of vitality and life’s song.

*

your answer was the undoing

of so many threads weaved by us,

into a snagged bit of yarn in knots.

*

being your everything was a goal,

the destination, the mountain’s peak,

but I let myself shatter in the process.

*

loving you was a kind of danger

spoken of in only whispers fleeting,

a dance of noise left to simmer away.

*

the truth is a meager thing standing

next to you, the king of deceit, but

playing my part was just a game.

*

the leading lady under lights

was never my place to claim,

yet I still burned under your gaze.

*

hero, villain, kindly take your pick:

you could be either when you wanted,

all with a smile to fool them all in spades.
