Twenty-One

By: Jonathan Hinternish

Twenty-One lives lost in one day.

A gunman made his way to a place of peace.

To cause chaos and hell.

How much?

Only time could tell.

Twenty-One lives lost that day.

A cowardly cop paved the way.

Placed within the school that day, cops were armed, then ran away!

A child covered herself in blood!

Playing dead, so she may live!

Nineteen children, and two adults dead!

A town let down!

A town feeling much dread.

Only now have time to bury little souls instead.

While cops now stained with blood on their hands!

Now the town is forever scarred by sadness and grief.

Will they ever find relief?

Ghostly echos of childrens’ voices sing through the air.

Forever saying: “We’re here. We still love you. We still care.”

They are the people of Uvalde, Texas.
