Nature is picture perfect

I hiked a six kilometre trail through the rainforest at Mount Glorious today and would love to share my journey with you.

A trek through the Australian Rainforest

Is an all consuming, stress reducing, haven,

The sights and sounds calming, relaxing

Calls of the parrots, bower birds and raven.

The towering trees acting as a shady canopy

Ensuring the humidity is at its optimal,

Pretty moss coverings and colourful fungi

All aiding the perfect condition be tropical.

Tree ferns raise their fronds to the moisture

As enormous trees compete for the light,

Dappled shade amid sun drenched rocks

A python quietly sun baking, gives you a fright.

Strangler Fig Trees, overrunning their host

Shaping and texturing, a feast to our eyes,

As they strangle the girth of the original tree

Beginning at ground level, up into the skies.

Small running creeks, the tinkle of running water

Mud skippers flittering across the surface,

Tiny minnows follow and swim in their wake

If you’re lucky you may also see a tortoise.

Squelching mud along the well worn trails

Leeches, laying in wait, hoping to hitch a ride,

Fallen trees degrading to nurture the earth

It’s worth it, the beauty that will not be denied.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
