To Wile Away My Days

As I wander this glorious earth

I wander this earth alone,

Through the majestic beauty and natural landscapes,

Blessed by the solitude,

The possibility to escape.

***

Today the sun is shining obliquely,

Misty fog diluting the gorgeous yellow rays,

The air is cold, almost freezing,

As it rips the warmth from my lungs, mingling with the haze.

***

My feet trek across the frozen wastelands,

The edges of the water icy and hard,

I’ve always dreamt of walking on water,

Perfectly crystal clear, it’s perfection unscarred.

***

The invisibility of the freeze,

Allows glimpses into a secret world under the ice,

Freezing cold water, luscious green water plants,

And fish, crustaceans and other water creatures, a gorgeous paradise.

***

In the distance, the steaming snow capped mountains,

My eventual destination,

Returning for Christmas with those I love,

My mother, my brother, my sister and one other relation.

***

All I own is packed upon my back,

The true meaning of being absolutely free,

Tied to nothing artificial,

No jealousy or envy upon others, no emotional debris.

***

All I need is this natural greenery,

To wile away my days as I wander,

Meeting those special human beings on loan to me,

As I spy their presence over yonder.

***

I’m thankful for every single day of my life,

Especially when I can meander through the wild,

Alone, in awe of Mother Nature,

For every day spent with her is reason enough to wear a smile.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
