The Storm

Inside Looking Out

The wind rattles my windowpanes

And howls ghosting through the eves

The trees sway and bend horizontally

Losing all their leaves.

*

The dark clouds overhead

Bend the day to their dark will

What was once bright daylight

Gives way to nighttime chill.

*

And the rain worst of all

Strikes my roof like demon scales

Scratching at the slate

Pelting my windows with demon nails.

*

As I look out upon the river below

Its swelled flanks

And burst banks

Are coming for me I know.

*

As for me

I sit by my fireside

With a blanket across my knee

Staring into the dancing flames

And drinking steaming hot tea.

*

Smiling at the furore outside my window

Whilst warm and safe and dry

It’s a unique thrill I love

And it always makes me sigh.

*

With happiness and contentment

As I’m bathed in my fireside glow

Knowing that I can’t be touched

By what’s happening down below.
