The Prison I've Built for Myself

. . .

I stare out through the bars of this prison of mine.

Like armored guards, this condition keeps me confined.

My fear wraps me in a uniform of orange linen,

And the numbers adorn my chest —

A digit for every fear, every regret.

Ever they increase, keeping me forever locked in.

...

Brick by brick, I’ve built this prison for myself —

Stone by stone, I laid my soul upon the shelf.

Bar by bar, I’ve hidden myself away.

Looking out through windows, I see them.

Immune to fear, they live in freedom.

Living in light, they feel the sun’s soft rays.

...

I remember their threats and their cruel taunts —

Their words echo in my mind as their joy they flaunt.

In the sun they bask, enjoying the kill of the day.

Through these bars, I stare with a burning flame.

I know it is not with them I must place the blame,

But it is upon my soul that they sought to prey.

...

I stare out through the bars of this prison of mine.

Like armored guards, this condition keeps me confined.

I look out through the windows and see them.

Brick by brick, I’ve built these walls for myself —

Stone by stone, I laid my soul upon the shelf.

While immune to fear, they live in freedom.
