The Perfect Day

A poem

She hides in the shade
Away from the hot sun
Enjoying the cool breeze

She’s with her people
Not her assigned parents and siblings
But her chosen family of friends

There are no lectures or judgments here
No hidden agendas or strings attached
Just acceptance
openness
love

She jumps
When someone’s hand touches her shoulder
Her feet clench
stomach churns
adrenaline pumps fast

Her body reacts from memories
She wishes
She could forget

She bolts upright
“Sorry! Didn’t mean to startle you,
Lay back down. Relax.”

Oh. It’s him.
She slowly uncoils, stretches back out
Lays next to him on the hard ground

She feels weak as the adrenaline wears off
They watch the soft clouds
His strong hand in hers

She thinks,
“I’m going to imprint this moment on my mind,
I want to remember it for the rest of my life.”

And
She
Does
