The Noise

A Poem from “Wandering”

The noise…

Yeah…

The noise…

I feel like I have lost all my composure,

And poise…

It’s simple to distract yourself by making bad decisions,

It started with one step,

But then you stumbled and fell,

And found yourself wandering through the belly of hell,

A starving beast,

Turns out that you are more than just today’s feast,

All while humbly begging as you fall down to your knees,

Please…

The only word you can speak.

The surprise is not knowing where you’re at when the depression starts to peak,

The more lost that you become the more things begin to look bleak,

Why is it so easy to give up and continue living in sin?

There’s a light at the end of this tunnel you’re in…

Remember it only took one step to begin…

Yeah…

The noise…

It can swallow you whole and laughs as it watches your life be destroyed,

And even through all the distractions you deploy it finds it’s way to you so shallow and coy,

Killing everything you once loved and all the things you enjoy…

Yeah…

The noise…

Telling you it’s so much easier if you give up,

An impossible task so you believe you can never live up,

Expectations surround you while your potential just drowns you,

It’s like going 12 rounds with a mental state that continues to pound you,

Down..

Yeah…

The noise…

They say it’s not real because it’s something you feel,

You keep doing your best to remain even keel,

But it grows louder and louder and all your senses it steals,

You keep on pushing but the slower things heal you cannot help but wonder if you should make a deal,

With the beast that is starving…

Yeah…

The noise….

Ever thought to yourself why can’t I just let it go?

And carry on, carry on, and continue to grow?

But you’re stuck in abyss and the valley is low,

You can’t see a way out- and this is a path you don’t know,

The beast grows hungrier than ever before..

It’s hunger grows drastic that it can longer ignore,

Yeah…

The noise…

You’ll find that this beast is so easy to feed,

By saying “if you just do this” that is all that it needs,

But this beast feeds on consequences that have been marinated in greed,

And pays no attention to your soul while it bleeds,

You would never know that it grows into weeds when it’s planting it’s seeds…

Yeah…

The noise…

If you could take it all back you swear that you would,

But you can’t take it back because it’s been carved in wood,

You don’t know if you can or if you even should..

Did you settle for less all because you could?

Yeah..

The noise..

It creeps in and starts off quite silent and subtle,

Then erupts in to madness as you fall in its puddle,

Can’t believe what you see because your thoughts are so jumbled,

You ended up here all from one simple stumble…

Yeah..

The noise…

This was a wild, enjoyable ride. It feels like rap, like it's meant to be read really fast - except for the elipses. I really loved the line "But this beast feeds on consequences that have been marinated in greed," that made me laugh out loud in surprise.
