The Night's Stars

And The Dark Space Between Them

She gets to breathe in

A little bit of heaven

Every time you

Hand her the sunshine

You hold within

I wonder if she

Even remembers

How cold the world

Is without you

She gets to see you

Walk out a door and

Not have to fear you

Won’t come back

She sees you walk

Away from her

Without really leaving

She gets to see you

Smile at her and

She gets to melt

From your nearness

Instead of your distance

I get withered flowers and

Crumpled conversations and

Nightmares disguised

As daydreams

I get the distant past

And painful present

And silences that suffocate

You handed her the very stars

In the night sky and

All you ever gave me was

The dark space between them

She has you and all I have

Is a broken heart that

Still belongs to you

A heart belonging to one who will not take it, even if they knew it was there.
