The Manor House Monterey

A poem about a haunted house. Make yourself at home.

Hello, come on into the Manor House of Monterey

Shall we put on a little music?...

There...that's better...

Now where were we?

Ah, yes I am the keeper of this home.

Shall we begin?

The clocks are tick, tick, ticking away.

Someone at the door knock, knock, knocking.

Upstairs, someone is stomp, stomp, stomping.

Breathing getting weighty. Night has fallen early.

Time to stop gnawing — nails have gone down to the skin.

Nothing but skin, pale and worn from within.

Barely hanging on, falling down, skin rotted and gone.

Piano keys bang, bang, banging away. In the hall the sound of a gong.

A sonnet of the night. A weeping romance in full decay.

The woman in white with no face — heart in dismay.

Do you hear it?

Do you see the withered spirit?

The clocks are tick, tick, ticking.

Someone at the door is knock, knock, knocking.

Up in the attic is a bump, bump, bumping….

The hallow night undone. Never done.

Chilly wonders bring out the small young one.

Small brick-a-bracks, tiny little living knick-knacks.

Down the hall is the woman in black.

Dare to stay one more night? Perhaps a deadly snack?

It’s playtime if you wouldn’t mind.

There’s a keeper of secrets who invites you in.

No wonder the curtains are blowing from outside in.

The willow and the moan — a hallway full of groans.

Come downstairs. It’s quite alright.

The dawn is soon coming to burn away dark light.

But first, you must sit there.

Can you hear it? The wolf of the ware? The howl from a faraway room?

Or the scratchings on the dining table from a fork or spoon?

Tick, tock, tick, tock…knock, knock, knock…

Bump, bump, scratch, bang.

It’s quite alright no need for that shaking.

Eyelids quite heavy do you dare let your head go steady?

That feeling if someone is watching. No need to ask. It’s not deadly.

Welcome to the manor house of Monterey, where nightmares are many.

Whose guests never sleep and scares are a-plenty.

No need to leave so early. No rush.

Please just sit with your fellow entity.

Yes, that’s right. You’re one of us, too.

In denial? We’d offer you a mirror, but there would be one one.

Not even a reflection to say “Boo!”

Now, can you feel it? The sounds of your home?

It’s been far too long since you were “the ghost unknown.”

Welcome to the manor where the clocks stay ticking

The doors remain knocking

The bumps in the night forever bumping

The scratches still scratching, and the screams forever screaming.

We hope you enjoy your stay. Get comfortable.

Everything here is perfectly mournful, ghastly and unforgettable.

Welcome to the Manor House Monterey.

Author's Note

My dear readers. I have been so ready for the spooky season that last week, I genuinely thought it was already October! Last week, I got a booking from a client that read "September 26th," and I thought my calendar had syncing issues...

Naturally, as you can read, I have gone full spooky season mode, so everything I am creating at the moment revolves around that. This poem was lightly (or heavily, depending on who you ask) inspired by Grim and Mild's 13 Days of Halloween, which has an AMAZING cast of voice actors, and I highly recommend it!
