The Little Things

It's when you reach for my hand as we're walking down the street,

Always warm, always soft.

It's when you get excited that the shop has that toy you've been dreaming about,

A toy whose name is a mystery to me.

It's when you try explaining to me why NinjaKidz are the best thing on YouTube,

And your patience with me when I show I clearly don't understand.

It's in your dexterous avoidance of the ball during one of games of hallway dodge-ball,

And your victory "Yes!" as you - yet again - emerge victorious.

It's in the way you carefully weigh up what chocolate bar you want me to buy,

And how I secretly admire your little experimental forays, never choosing the same one twice.

It's in the way you explain to me why Monkey will always be your favorite cuddly toy,

Despite the mountain of other pretend simians you possess.

It's in the way you leap on me as the wave machine thunders into life,

And the your shrieks of joy as we're pummeled by another powerful swell.

It's in the picture you drew for me for Father's Day,

One of the single greatest works of art I've ever seen.

It's in every little thing you do, my daughter.

Every little thing.

Little things that mean the world to me.
