The Ladder
From one generation to another
Climb and climb, climb so high
This ladder you thought went to great heights
You finally get to the top and look around to see
There's nowhere to be
This ladder of dreams, leads to no thing
They scream at you work, work, work
And high, perched precariously up in the sky
You see no prize, to be caught
So they kick you off, tell you to spread your wings
And hope to God that you learned how to fly
This ladder of hope, this ladder of dreams
This ladder of "work hard and you'll get everything"
As you plummet down, impending the crash
You see everything you earned flying past
The checklists and milestones
Look so far away now
Like a twinkling star tumbling down
To your left another ladder, patronizing and cruel
To your right a trail of weeds
Untouched, unbothered, kind of looks like where you want to be
So we go right through the thickets and thorns
Because that paradise we know that's waiting on the other side
That ladder you love that gets you so high
Even from the top
You can't see the other side
