The Heartbeat of the Enchanted

The ultimate feeling to fill the heart

The heart is both a twofold blessing and a heart wrenching nemesis,

Holding our memories of love and woes,

The best of the best; the worst of the worst,

Memories of friends and others of foes.

***

The pain shatters and often breaks us,

Until love comes along to help us heal,

The ups and downs, the brokenness and new,

Without this vessel we’d never know how we feel.

***

Memories of yesterday and yesteryear,

Make us into the gifts that we are,

The love we fill our hearts with,

The feelings that become our guiding star.

***

The pain a lesson of which to learn,

The betrayals of our family and past friends,

Causing the deepest of scorching heartbreak,

That only loving memories are the reason it ends.

***

Guard this precious vessel with the strength of your soul,

Don’t let those that have betrayed you back in,

Treasure the beauty of those that connect with love,

As it is these gifts that will see you win.

***

Feel the good and the bad of love’s past messages,

Learn the lessons of your unique heart,

Know that love is the ultimate fulfilment,

So say goodbye to those that need to part.

***

Don’t look back at the losses in regret,

Those losses were not love in its purity,

But the sadness of those that caused the pain,

Those full of jealousy and insecurity.

***

Remember the joy of a heart full of love,

Strive for this perfection on a daily basis,

Travel the rainbows of caring and empathy,

On the way to life’s loving oasis.

***

We needed the pain to learn the joy,

Without it we’d take it all for granted,

But don’t wallow in the sorrow,

Instead live in the heartbeat of the enchanted.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Your rhyme scheme here was excellent! I find that love exists independent of our relations with others, and that the mistake we often make is to make our willingness and ability to love dependent upon the presence of others. But love, being about acceptance, is a presence in itself that grows in the quiet space where we find peace. We must learn as we grow to only let those in who will respect the sanctity of the space. If it turned out that the most loving people in the world were also the most lonely, or maybe just the most alone, I would not be surprised.

  • Thank you for this my friend. I needed to read this. I feel like I'm a piñata at a party where all the kids can hit me at the same time. Your poem make me feel slightly better.

This one is a winner for sure, Colleen! I have enjoyed reading your work for a long time, and I think you just keep getting better. I have missed a lot of it because of my ultra-limited reading time. Life happens. And the good and bad, happy and sad, highs and lows, as you write about so eloquently. I am now going to scroll back up and read your other story. I plan to buy your new book soon...it looks great!!
