THE END OF MY LOVE AFFAIR
I
i dreamed we were kissing (again) last night,
your lips like the soft rain falling
(on the roof of my house).
i was awakened by the sound of violence (on the TV) from the next room
II
love can bring down a well planned wall
love conquers all (or so they say)
love covers the sound of my fall
but only nothing is welcome to stay
III
"Paul Simon is right," Dad said
(stirring his black coffee, no sugar),
"Everyone loves the sound of a train in the distance."
(Not crashing through your well planned wall.)
IV
we were holding hands,
yours soft and white,
mine brown and hard
(in the lobby of a nursing home),
waiting,
a whistling train in the distance
