the day after

everything you had is gone

the day after

the old woman sits alone in her room

her husband is gone, the kids have moved out

she dreams of the day she first saw her groom

a bright young wife, she never had a doubt

she recalls the day she became a mom

twenty-three with a baby on her hip

her husband off fighting in Vietnam

struggling everyday to get a grip

but she wouldn’t trade it for anything

she loved him and the kids with all she had

but now on her vanity sits his ring

the pictures on the wall just make her sad

she looks in the mirror and can’t disguise

the pain that is sitting behind her eyes

sad poetry
