The scent of mown grass on the summer air
I shade my eyes from the blazing sun
Thoughts of you fill my mind
Of the way you looked that wondrous day.
*
We sat in silence
Our picnic spread before us
Gazing into each other’s eyes
Your face summer tanned my nose was peeling
I got sunburned that wondrous day.
*
But you didn’t.
*
You laughed so much my heart swelled within me
My love for you a bountiful well
Your lips so full, so soft upon mine
I love you still as I loved you then.
*
But you don’t.
*
We spent the next two summers together
Happy almost every single day
But then you came home one awful Sunday
And you told me you’d met someone else.
*
His name was Jeff.
*
You said don’t be sad you’ll find someone better
I was never good enough for you
You’ll meet someone your mother approves off
Someone better than me.
*
And I laughed. Then I cried. Then you left.
