Sunken Shadows
By Brianna Galligan
When the seeds of sleep drift on the leaves…
As darkness falls and light recedes…
Amid the shadows of the eaves…
We feel the full moon’s glow.
The months that fade into December
For all the past which we remember
Of fires bright to dying ember
Set among temperatures low.
The red of berries and black of night
Rustling birds that did take flight
Whistling winds which tell their plight
As evening’s shadows grow.
To live, to die unto tomorrow
While alleviating sorrow
Wishing always just to borrow
A single life to which we owe.
One special soul who is our loss
The fate at which our paths did cross
That now lies sleeping in the moss
In a green cascading flow.
Ever silent like a mime
Listening closely for a chime
Telling us it is the time
When the world will finally know.
Hoping to escape a nightmare
Now becoming hard to bare
Waiting for a single care
Of starlight’s forbidden show.
