Every day I’m a little bit farther

But still, some times

I close my eyes

and see flaming red,

squinting to block

those blinding rays.

We waited a year

for a cactus to bloom,

until the scent of Hibiscus

slowed staggered hearts,

and we lay on hot sands

to soothe the body ache

of a grand adventure.

How lovely it was

to be held by that heat—

to know your brotherly worries,

fears from your father,

your grandmother’s secrets,

that iridescent smile—

to be in your arms

for a few moments

and to think of it forever

when I feel the sun
