What If?

Suffocating Sickness

But what if your wounds

Drained me of blood too?

What if your smile

Warmed my sun and

Brought the sky closer?

What if your nearness

Steadied the ground

Beneath my feet

And your absence

Took it away?

What if I love you?

What do I do then?

What do I do when

Love is no longer

A fairy-tale myth but

A suffocating sickness?

I’m smiling at you

But you don’t look

To the clear blue sky

Or the bandage

Hugging my heartbeats

What if I love you but

You don’t love me?
