Through the Generations
Resilience to persevere is in the DNA
They find the silver lining I each new day
They survive the trials that take others out
They have faith when those around them doubt
Pushing past failure they know how to thrive
Born with a will and determination to survive
Strength and honor runs through the bloodline
Never say never is their favorite line
They have the will and make a way
Ignoring those who tell them nay
Long life good health and strength they possess
Passed down from ancestors who didn’t settle for less
Up to each challenge they are fierce and bold
Feminine confident and sire of their goals
They move forward easily from grief and pain
Knowing I front of them is much to gain

The Fish Song
The room didn’t smell like disinfectants. Its fragrance seemed light and not overbearing. A soft mixture of lavender and mint permeated the space. No beeping machines or any tubes hooked up to four-year-old Kaleeka. Her cacao skin seemed to glow from the light over her head. The family, save for one and the doctors and nurses exited the room like a trail of saints showing their last vestiges of regard.
