Stitch By Stitch
a poem by Misty Rumsley
Life could be like a piece of knitting
Her mama told her
The first rows can look messy
But a beautiful beginning
Stitch by stitch
-
No life is made of all the same colours
No day is ever the same as the one before.
From one needle to the next and then back
Her papa told her
Stitch by stitch
-
One side of the cloth looks different
from the other
Sometimes the wool tangles
and creates knots too tight to undo
Her uncle told her
Stitch by stitch
-
When that happens
Grandma told her
I cut the knot out and tie the ends together
I can try to hide it among the stitches
But I know it's there, imperfect
What life isn't?
-
You go on
her sister told her
In happiness or waiting for a break
How ever long the piece is and
whatever it looks like at the end...
You cast off your last stitch
Draw your last breath
A garment the next generation to wear
