Stargazing

We all ache.

The world slowly melted around her,

the surroundings and sounds ceased, except for him.

She gazed up into the night sky, taking it all in,

wishing she could touch the stars that seemed so close were so far.

They spoke softly, sharing their stories and their pasts.

Her heart skipped a beat every time he spoke,

his voice pulling her further and further away from reality.

They fell silent—admiring the beauty of space, of the cosmos, of the universe.

Time stood still in that moment.

Her heart ached for him, so close yet so far.

In that moment she wished she could tell him how she felt.

How she had fallen slowly, then all at once.

She fell for his smile, his eyes, his laugh,

his quirks, his personality, his everything.

She knew it was wrong.

She couldn’t fall for someone who could never be hers.

But she did.

She imagined what it would be like to let herself give in, and kiss him.

To pull him close and feel his lips against hers.

To feel his heartbeat, his breath against her skin,

his hands around her waist and her body pressed against his.

Embracing each other and forgetting the world.

Forgetting everything that came before, and not caring what came after.

Her heart ached.

Her heart ached for what was never hers, and could never be hers.
