Social Distancing Senior
A Covid-19 Poem written in 2020
Poor social distancing senior,
The world falls apart just as you're about to become a diploma achiever.
You spent thirteen long years pretending to be sick to stay away.
“Careful what you wish for” they say,
Who knew five words could ring so true.
For you see, they thought it was the flu.
We stand by as our heroes and peers drop like flies,
And all we had to do to stop the spread was stay inside.
Coronavirus, Covid-19,
Call it what you want, I prefer the term “Goodbye Prom Queen”.
We spent years trying to not break out of line and to fit the mold,
But when it's finally our time to shine we’re pushed into a quarantine hold.
We live in a time where technology is in its prime,
But when it's needed most it crashes from everyone being online at one time.
Before the apocalyptic pandemic, we were always told we were addicted to our little screens.
Now, the only way to attend class is through that very little screen.
We look to the web to feel connected,
Even though before all we had to do was look up.
We spent our whole lives working hard for what?
A handshake, a piece of paper, and a 30 second walk down an old stage.
Now, we can only hope for a piece of paper and a 3 second walk to an old mailbox.
Our celebration of us will be spent in fear of contagion instead of congratulations on our graduation.
Poor social distancing senior.
I hope you have no plans for the future,
Because everytime we ask what's going to happen,
The only reply is “I don’t know” or “anything could happen”.
No, you won't get your last Goodbye,
But you’re alive.
