People always talk of
How we affect
The children in our lives
But they have it backwards
Their impact on us is greater
We provide them sustenance
Support, safety, and security
And for that we receive
The infinite grace of God’s love
As only can be conveyed
Through the smiling eyes of a child
Just yesterday I felt this grace
In the warmth from the back
Of a boy’s neck cupped in my hand
And laughter from a hoola hoop
Contest I had no chance to win
In an instant I was taught
The profound realization that
It’s the small things in life
That matter most
To children and to God
This is all I know
