Shipwreck

A Poem

Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire, England

The sea is the sole thing that still scares me.

Endless waves tumbling across my pruning toes, time after time,

Remind me of the endless possibilities that could have been,

Yet never were.

Wading through sand that scatters beneath each step,

Like stars at the breath of the moon,

I retell my tale to the gulls overhead.

In a tongue encrusted with cockle shells,

I whisper words that fall like the pebbles I could never quite skim,

As my body casts shadows that take the shape of a shipwreck.

The sea scares me because it offers an easy escape.
