She Rules Her Roost

With patience and tenacity

She waits in trepidation, not knowing the outcome,

Blindly trusting in her faith, taking it as it comes,

Her lessons will find her without any delay,

And she’ll pick up the pieces from the resulting crumbs.

**

She spent days hoping it’d be different,

She thought she’d seen a light off in the far distance,

Patiently holding on tight, begging for relief,

Only to find the courage in future resistance.

**

Life’s heartache is at times a blessing unknown,

When she inspected the past her eyes were widened,

Realising her existence really did have her back,

And she had no reason to be so frightened.

**

Trust built into a mountain of gratitude,

She learned to shrug off the gale force wind,

Let the rain pour and wash her days clean,

Drenching the heartbreak for all that she sinned.

**

Her skin puckers at the thought of facing her fears,

But she doesn’t hesitate as she pulls up her big girl pants,

She now goes with the flow, time waits for no one,

And silently smiles as the world crazily rants.

**

Her ego whispers in her ears and she starts to crumble,

Then realises it’s a tiny set back, not a major catastrophe,

She rises to her feet once more and soldiers on,

Rebuilding her bridges patiently and happily.

**

Her feet pound the pavement of her wishes and dreams,

She roves the world on her moral bandwagon,

Fighting off bullies, tormenting the cruelty,

Fighting the good fight with her internal dragon.

**

She’s her own best friend, her closest confidante,

She knows she has the strength to survive,

With no knowing how many years she has left,

She’s determined to prove to all that she’s still alive.

**

Her growth this last year has been painful and sordid,

But the person she’s become leaves no stone unturned,

She’ll befriend the weak, assist the downtrodden,

But break her heart and see your bridges burned.

**

She feeds her soul from the menu of nurture,

Runs the gauntlet of her daily test,

Striving for awareness, living life to the hilt,

Waking each day at her very best.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

  • She’ll befriend the weak, assist the downtrodden, But break her heart and see your bridges burned. And that is why I call myself an empathic sociopath 🤣🤣🤣 Loved your poem!

  • You go, my friend! How immanent is your transition into Nomadland?

I feel like you wrote this one for me! It's too bad that only one read per reader counts, because I have already read it four times, and I am not finished with it yet. I see the ups and downs of several decades in the lines of this poem. The constant need to remind myself that it's just a little setback, not a catastrophe. Always looking for the light of the tunnel. I am about to check out your website and plan to buy your new book as soon as I can.
