Why We Write (With apologies to Frank Capra)

Point Pelee on Lake Erie

What is our purpose in this big empty space?

Why, to fill it of course, to make it a place

of hopes and dreams, ideals and screams

of laughter and fear, but most of all

our task is to bring eyeballs to stare

at whatever sensations we can conjure from nothing.

Its entropy is our enemy,

but why is this so?

The reasons, I fear, are different from here

than from wherever the need for profit dwells,

and only Heaven knows from Hell

who really so badly wants us

to show and not tell.

Words are no longer wanted

when value is measured in numbers for free.
