Rough Smoke Women

To my strong women, rough smoke in the lungs of men.

Here’s to my brave women,

The loud ones, the quiet ones,

With minds as sharp as knives

And hearts as soft as rain.

Here’s to the scarred women,

The fierce ones, the shy ones,

With souls all set aflame.

You were stolen--

You were broken--

Then betrayed time and time again.

But you stayed strong,

Like black coffee and cigarettes;

Rough smoke in the lungs of men.

And when they coughed

At your harsh strength--

Your bitter brew too much to handle,

You looked them the eye and said,

“You will not blow out my candle.”
