Rocking Chair
Passing time
Me, upon her knee,
swaying slowly
forward and back,
forward and back.
Granny humming,
me squirming,
until giving in
to the soothing sensations.
Eyes drooping and finally...
sleep,
pleasant dreams
in the comfort
of Granny's arms
on the old rocking chair.
*
Passing time -
her life disappearing.
Me, rocking alone,
face tear-soaked,
my own arms
wrapped around myself,
wishing they were hers.
Swaying angrily
forward and back,
forward and back.
Chair creaking.
Me, restless,
sleepless.
*
Passing time,
life drifting by.
My daughter
upon my knee,
swaying
forward and back,
forward and back.
Me humming,
her squirming,
until giving in
to the soothing sensations.
Eyes drooping and finally...
sleep,
pleasant dreams
in the comfort
of my arms
on the old, paint-chipped rocking chair.
