Life’s river flows

Without surcease

Once fresh and clear

Now salt and bitter

Storm tossed as the sea

Wave upon wave

Swells with the tide

Which comes more than goes

Ripples, whirls, and swirls and squalls

Sand battered and scattered

Only unforgiving rocks remain

And sharp pebbles that bite

Those soft, vulnerable parts

Though kept well hidden

Water always finds a way

Creeps through the tiniest cracks

Pulls us under and overwhelms

Not waving but drowning, they say

Toil and hardship thwart

what used to be play

And still the river flows

Even when choked

to a stream,

a mere trickle,

life rolls on to become

A drop in the ocean

At the final extremity

Alone returns to all one

Harmony, I really appreciate the striking and sensational imagery you inserted within this poem! I felt like I could see and feel every image and sensation you described, as though I was there with you! The line that stuck with me the most was "life rolls on to become A drop in the ocean"... I took it to mean that although one day might have been terrible and possibly the worst you've had, it's only one day in the many many droplets of days you've had! This felt very uplifting and inspiring! Great work!

Hi, Harmony, I have always had difficulty understanding poems, but not this one. You made it it so easy to understand, and yet, so deep. I enjoyed it.

  • I found this to be very thought provoking. Water always finds a way. That line was so powerful! Loved your poem!

I love the way this came full round. Life feels like this endless cyclical journey of trickles and typhoons, of separating and coming together over and over. "Even when choked" that line got to me. This entire piece was very emotional. Loved it :)

Oh there is a lot of stunning, sad beauty to this. It's so true though, life, like a river, rolls on, no matter what. Even after someone dies, the rest of the world continues... Love this, Harmony!
