Rainbow In The Dark

A poem about finding hope in these troubling times.

When it seems like you've reached your limit

Ready to simply collapse and never get back up again

When it feels like it would be easier to let the darkness win

Let it envelope you in its cold and numbing embrace

Remember that within the dark is always light

Color remains within even the deepest of fogs

Hope is always there, even when it's hard to see it

All you have to do is brave the storm

Weather the lightning

Stand tall against the thunder

And do what you can to protect your heart and soul

From the winds and rains that threaten to destroy them

To drag them kicking and screaming into the abyss

To become lost forever in the hopelessness

Happiness can always be found, even in the grimmest circumstances

In the smile of a newborn baby

In the familiar jokes of your old favorite TV show

In your father's endless stream of hilariously terrible jokes

In your favorite pair of socks that you always wear to bed

In treating yourself to your favorite junk food

In escaping into the realm of your favorite books

Even when the dark threatens to seep its way into your mind

Remember the happy times; the beautiful memories

The thoughts that always bring you warmth and comfort

For these are the memories that can prove just what you need

To withstand the barrage of wickedness the world throws your way

To keep the cynicism from taking claim over your mind and body

Right now, the world is a scary place to look at

With violence and hate seeming to infect every corner of the map

But even as fear threatens to mangle the hearts of many

Remember that once upon a time, we all came into this world anew

Pure and unblemished by the world's ugliness

Remember this when you feel despair reaching out to you

Remember the fond memories when light seems far beyond reach

Remember the little things that bring you happiness and love

And show the world that the storms won't bring you down

As long as you remember the rainbows awaiting you on the other side
