Prompted Poem: Courage
A furtive, floundering flame
flickers in the howling wind.
Cinder,
beginning to burn again,
despite the tenebrous,
icy landscape.
Shaped by fear
bearing down on all sides,
threatening stillness,
all things it divides
and conquers in time.
Better to burn
every last bit of fuel
than to be snuffed out
in the vestibule,
never having even attempted
to enter.
It's true —
nobody leaves the labyrinth alive,
and we've just as much anguish
as joy to archive
before the end.
To have courage is to know this and,
nonetheless, to strive.
About the Creator
Jacob Sherman
The desire to read, and perhaps to write, should be cultivated and nurtured with care throughout every stage of life. For my part I will inject what strangeness and truth that I can into our written history. Expect no constants but honesty.
