PRIVILEGED
Poems from Journal Titled, Black and Blue (2018 - 2019)
"PRIVILEGED"
Poem derived from my first completed journal, Black and Blue (2018-2019). Written April 29th 2018.
~~~~~~~
Shoutout to the privileged:
In trips and unlimited credit,
that never knew what it was to
lose sleep over an extra $500 a month
just to afford the luxury of leaving this fucked up,
segregated that everyone loves.
You're fortunate, baby girl.
Let me holla at the privileged:
In money and power
who willingly have the choice of whether or not
to pursue their passions,
because dollar bills ain't a concern
for your success,
When you rest your head on down pillows every night.
Those York Avenue traffic sounds are lullabies
compared to the rush of cop cars and ambulances up on
106th street and Madison.
But you wouldn't know that.
You're privileged.
Privilege is when you choose to struggle.
Not when you're forced into its sacred union,
aching for a divorce you can't afford.
Shoutout to you, privileged princess,
for never having to feel a sense of urgency
on carrying out what you believe your purpose is
because your family doesn't
singlehandedly depend on your success.
Maybe I'm weak.
Or am I just as privileged as you?
You see, mine looks differently, I'll say.
So, I'll shout you out once more, but
let me spell it out for you:
Passion in my blood, my ink my words,
Ready to release medicinal healing
In waves through kinetic art
Vital for all those who lack an
Intellectual understanding of the
Latent meaning of the word "privileged":
Eager to see the world in order to
Greatly change it,
Eager to stop skipping on my responsibilities that
don't seem to be as imperative as the urge for my
privileged ass to create,
share,
and heal.
What a true privilege it is
to have LOVE,
and FREE THOUGHT,
and a pen to begin an incessant
journey of change, did you know?
